Picture Frame Sizes

Standard picture frame sizes range from small 4x6 snapshot frames to large 30x40 statement pieces. The chart below lists every common frame size with dimensions in both inches and centimeters, along with the standard mat opening for each. Whether you are framing a family photo, an art print, or a movie poster, this guide will help you find the right fit.

Understanding Frame Sizes

Standard Sizes

Frame sizes are listed as width by height in inches. The most popular sizes for everyday photos are 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10. These match standard print sizes from most photo labs and home printers. Larger sizes like 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36 are used for art prints, posters, and canvas wraps.

Mat Openings

A mat (also called a mount) is a cardboard border placed between the artwork and the frame. The mat opening is the window cut into the mat that reveals the image. Standard mats have a 2 to 3-inch border. The opening is slightly smaller than the artwork so the mat overlaps and holds the piece in place.

Frame Depth

Frame depth (or rabbet depth) is how deep the channel is that holds the glass, mat, artwork, and backing. Standard frames have a depth of 3/8 to 1/2 inch. For thicker items like stretched canvas or shadow boxes, look for frames with deeper rabbets or use spacers.

Choosing the Right Size

For photos and prints, match the frame to your print size or choose a larger frame with a mat for a gallery look. Wall art should fill 60 to 75 percent of the available wall space above furniture. See our frame sizing guide for detailed tips.
